The
story: An increase in home gardening and the desire to save
money have caused a surge in the popularity of old-fashioned root
cellars.
The hook: Though it may seem as easy as throwing a bag of
potatoes in the basement, there is more to a root cellar than meets the
eye
— proper
temperature and moisture levels are key. Kathryn Hopkins, a University
of Maine Cooperative Extension educator, is available to discuss the
practical side of root cellars. Patricia Henner, director of the Page
Farm and Home Museum on the University of Maine campus, has done
extensive research on the history of root cellars and is available to
discuss that aspect.
